1 About this time the migration from the eastern seabord section of the country to the "wilderness country" beyond the mountains was in full swing. One of the many families who left their old homes for new ones in the "West" was the Kennedy Family, and Zachariah Wheat with his young wife, Elizabeth Kennedy Wheat, came with them.
With all their earthly possessions in saddle bags, they made their way thru the Cumberland Gap and up the "Wilderness Road" and "Boone's Trail", laid out by Daniel Boone a few years before, until they reached their destination in what is now Bourbon Co., KY. In this land beyond the mountains was begun a new home. The land was cleared and a cabin built, and here they rasied their family.
Family (F490)

2 According to family traditions the progenitor of the Wheat Family in America was Charles Wheat who came from England and settled in Maryland. There is no record of the date.
It is said he had two daughters and seven sons, all Revolutionary War Soldiers. This information was obtained from a paper found in the possessions of the grandmother of a Missouri descendant.
WHEAT, Charles (I1509)

3 John and his wife were living in Bedford Co., VA when their story begins.
In August 1780 a draft for regular soldiers took every 15th man and another draft was then pending (February 1781) for every 13th man. Before that drawing took place a British force was announced as within a day's ride and John Kennedy was summoned to join, and in less than three hours the troops designated to resist the invaders were on their way. He was taken prisoner shortly after at Guilford Court House, NC, placed on a prison ship and literally starved to death.
The battle of Guilford Court House, NC was fought on March 15, 1781 -- it was a defeat for the Americans, but Cornwallis's army was so badly crippled that he decided to go to Wilmington, NC where communication with the English fleet would be easy. It was there no doubt that the prisoners, including John Kennedy, were put on the prison ship "Jersey". John Kennedy died on board this ship 26 Jun 1781.
KENNEDY, John (I1408)

4 John, Joseph and Basil Wheat came to Bedford Co., VA from Maryland during or at the close of the Revolution.
John and his wife Susan (Sookie) were originally from Maryland. Their history goes back before the Revolutionary Days.
John was a surveyor. On 11 Feb 1782 he purchased, for 1000 pounds, land in Bedford Co., VA from his brother Basil Wheat. This now (1954) a lovely farm owned by Norwood Burks, a cousin of Mr. Frank W. Burks, husband of "Cousin Sally" Wheat Burks.
It seems all the children of John and Sookie Wheat left Bedford Co. and presumably moved west to Kentucky. However Zachariah is the only one of whom we have any Kentucky record.
WHEAT, John (I1503)

5 Three Wheats are listed in "Gwathney's Revolutionary War List" in Virginia State Library, Richmond, VA. They are Basdill (probably Basil), Jacob and Littlebury Wheat. There is no proof to show whether or not Jacob or Littlebury are sons of Charles.
John, Joseph and Basil Wheat came to Bedford Co., VA from Maryland during or at the close of the Revolution. First to buy land -- 1779.
WHEAT, Basil (I1513)

6 Volney Wheat became one of the leading physicians in Paris and the surrounding countryside. Quoting from Norman Wood, a grandson of Jahab Wheat, a brother of Volney: "Dr. Volney Wheat ...as fine an old school gentleman and country physician as there was in the Blue Grass Region. He had numerous babies named for him and the longest funeral procession that ever entered the Paris Cemetery. I was there and I know."
The records of Transylvania College show that Volney G. Wheat of Paris, KY was a student in the graduate school of Transylvania Medical College during the year 1839-1840. Where he obtained his previous medical education is not known, but probably by means of tutelage. Further research may reveal this information.
Transylvania Medical College at that time was one of the two outstanding medical schools in the country -- the other being the Medical College of the University of Pennsylvania located in Philadelphia.
Dr. Wheat was always much interested in education. He was a contributor to the fund for the establishment of the Kentucky Agricultural College which later became the University of Kentucky. In his will he stated that it was his desire that each of his children should receive "an English education".
Dr. Wheat was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
On a visit to his brother Milton, a farmer in Adair Co., KY, he met the girl who later became his wife.
WHEAT, Volney Godney M.D. (I1404)

7 !BAPTISM-CONFLICT: Some records show St-Etienne-Lauzon, Levis, PQ, Canada to be the place of his baptism, and this seems to be confirmed in the census of 1920 at least in part, since it says he was naturalized in 1890 and born in Canada. Family however, claims he was born in the US.

!EMMIGRATION-NATURALIZATION: 1890, according to the 1920 census, which showed Louis to be living at 648 First Ave, in Berlin, NH

!COMMENT: His first three children were born in Biddeford in ME. Went to work in the paper mill after the WWI in Gorham and settled in Berlin, NH, and that's where Robert and Pauline were born. The 1920 Census showed this family living at 648 First Ave, in Berlin, NH. Louis-33 yrs, Florenda-27 yrs, Paula-6 yrs, Romeo-5 yrs, Robert-6 mo. Louis left the family and dissapeared sometime in the 1920's. He was with the family as late as 1925, but may have left in 1926 or 1927. He was familiar with Boston area since he grew up there, and reportedly was living in MA somewhere.

!DEATH: Probably somewhere in CT. He was known to have lived somewhere in the otwn of either New Haven or New London, CT. Date of death is not known.

41 !BIRTH: From the records of Pauline Flibotte Lambert. !COMMENT: Worked for years at the Brown Co. in Berlin NH. Is now known as the James River Paper Co. He was called Paul or "Nap" by his friends at the plant, due to his habit of napping of the job. He was an alcoholic, and after he left the company, even though he was more often than not drunk, his former co-workers would often take him back to the plant to assist in locating underground piping, for which he reportedly had an amazing knack. He would pace in one direction, then the other, and mark the ground, and say, "Dig." He rarely missed.

44 !BIRTH: She may have been born in Thetford Mines, PQ, Canada. Her daughter Pauline Flibotte Lambert recalls trips to that are to visit relatives. I've concluded she was not born in Berlin, or Biddeford.

!CENSUS-CHECK: Perhaps the Census of 1920 whould show where she was born, and the birth place of her parents.
MERCIER, Laura (I1923)

45 !BIRTH: St-Etienne-Lauzon, Levis, PQ, Canada, This information per Robert LAmbert, Hobe Sound, FL. LAMBERT, Calixte (I1977)

46 !COMMENT-CONFLICT-MARRIAGE: "1885-1977 Repertory of Mariages Sainte Anne, Berlin, NH. Marriages du Comte Coos", Book 4B, P.118. According to this source, the marriage was not listed in the parish records, but was found in the civil or town records. Dumas, Eugenie (Favin -- Delina Paquette) m. 1-19-1891 Morris, Esdras (Thom. -- Agnes Blais) Although it contains obvious mistakes, it appears to be the same marriage. Husband's name was Mercier not Morris. The fact that it is not listed in parish registers accounts for the difficulty in finding this entry. Also, the fact that it's listed under the bride and not the groom made it all the more difficult to locate. In this researcher's opinion, this is the correct marriage. DUMAIS, Eugenia Rose (I1928)

47 !COMMENT-MARRIAGE-SOURCE: After Jean was killed in the accident in Boston, she married a second time. This time to a Landry. Robert Lambert one of her grandsons, recalls that this was confusing to him as a young child.

RESIDENCE: She lived in Cascade, NH during her second marriage, right across the street from Louis Lambert (son) and his family. Pauline Lambert says that Desange Dubois was very proud to be French, in fact claimed that she was not Canadian French, but "Parisian" French.
DUBOIS, Desange (I1971)

48 !COMMENT-SOURCE: According to Robert Lambert (grandson) of Hobe Sound, FL, Jean was a church builder, a carpenter who made his living in the Boston area.

!DEATH-SOURCE: It is said that he died in No. Cambridge, MA on his return home from work, he stepped off a streetcar and was killed by an automobile. At that time he was working on a grand hotel with his brother George and son Louis.

EMMIGRATION-NATURALIZATION: He became an American citizen at same time Louis, his son did since they came to the US in 1890. Census, 1920, National Archives.

!MARRIAGE-SOURCE: Married at St-Etienne d'Lauzon Parish, Levis, Quebec. Parish Registers, in ACGS, Manchester, NH.
